So I had to apply first. I got in touch with the company's distributor who put me in touch with the Brand Manager for KEVIN.MURPHY. After that, I had to send in my audition packet. The audition packet consisted of my resume, two Letters of Recommendation, a Letter of Intent and a 5 MINUTE PODCAST VIDEO demonstrating how to do one of the KEVIN.MURPHY KIT.LOOKS. I was so nervous. I don't think I let anyone see this video. SO, HERE YOU GO WORLD........HERE IS MY AUDITION VIDEO
I was told that I needed to purchase a ticket to Kansas City, MO for training. I LOVE TO TRAVEL. I love airports. I love flying. I love people watching and meeting new people. I LOVE new experiences! Easy peasy. Then there was sharing a room. I'm a woman. Women are kind of weird with each other sometimes. I was a little nervous my roommate wouldn't be cool. I lucked out again! My roommate was AWESOME! Super sweet and anxious to learn, just like me! We were in class 8 hours a day. My brain felt like it was going to explode with information! We had to give a presentation over the information that we had received......once again, SO NERVOUS. I haven't experienced something as nerve wracking as giving a presentation over information that everyone in the room already knows. They all know what you're SUPPOSED to say. Once I got up there though, not as hard as I thought. Everyone was super supportive and very nice and the criticism was definitely constructive and not insulting. It felt so nice to be around such a supportive group of like minded individuals.
Over the past few months I have gotten to go to different salons to shadow other educators and learn new techniques for styling hair. It has been eye opening and humbling. I have felt throughout my career that there are far too many outdated ways of looking at being a hairstylist. Some people think that you should have to go through a rigorous apprenticeship where you are forced to sweep hair, clean, run errands and get belittled in order to prove yourself to someone. I don't believe in educating new stylists in this manner. Everyone deserves respect and positive influences to surround themselves with in order to grow personally and professionally.
I am so proud to be a part of such a wonderful team of educators and that we work with, and for, two wonderful companies (KEVIN.MURPHY and SSG). I'm very excited to see where this path will lead me! Stay tuned for more videos, educational material and just general fun updates in the extraordinary adventures in hair that I am sure to have! <3
